Post Suture Removal Instructions
After suture removal, patients should be instructed to perform hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub before touching the wound, monitor for signs of infection including increased pain, redness, swelling, or drainage, and avoid activities that place tension on the wound. 1
Wound Care Instructions
- Clean the wound daily with mild soap and water 1, 2
- Pat the area dry with a clean towel; do not rub the wound 1
- Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointment if recommended by your healthcare provider 2
- Cover the wound with a clean, dry bandage if it's in an area prone to irritation; otherwise, leaving it uncovered is acceptable 1, 2
- Change the bandage daily or when it becomes wet or soiled 2
Activity Restrictions
- Avoid soaking the wound in water (baths, swimming pools, hot tubs) for at least 24-48 hours after suture removal 1, 3
- Gradually return to normal activities, but avoid activities that place excessive tension on the wound for 1-2 weeks 1
- Protect the wound from direct sunlight for several months to prevent discoloration 4
- For wounds on fingers, avoid heavy lifting or activities requiring significant grip strength for 1-2 weeks 1
Warning Signs to Monitor
- Increased pain, redness, or swelling extending beyond the wound edges 1, 3
- Purulent drainage or discharge from the wound 1, 3
- Fever or systemic symptoms 3
- Wound reopening (dehiscence) 1, 3
- Red streaking from the wound site (sign of spreading infection) 1, 3
When to Seek Medical Attention
- If any of the warning signs above develop 1, 3
- If the wound reopens or edges separate 3
- If you develop a fever over 38.5°C (101.3°F) 3
- If pain is not controlled with over-the-counter pain medications 3
Long-Term Wound Care
- Apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) to the healed wound when exposed to sunlight for at least 6 months to prevent hyperpigmentation 4
- Massage the healed scar with moisturizer once fully healed (typically 2-4 weeks after suture removal) to improve appearance 2
- Scar maturation continues for up to 12 months; the appearance will continue to improve during this time 2
Remember that proper wound care after suture removal is essential for optimal healing and minimal scarring. Follow these instructions carefully to ensure the best possible outcome.
