From the FDA Drug Label

4 Drugs Affecting Renal Function Because FTC and tenofovir are primarily excreted by the kidneys by a combination of glomerular filtration and active tubular secretion, coadministration of BIKTARVY with drugs that reduce renal function or compete for active tubular secretion may increase concentrations of FTC, tenofovir, and other renally eliminated drugs and this may increase the risk of adverse reactions. Some examples of drugs that are eliminated by active tubular secretion include, but are not limited to, acyclovir, cidofovir, ganciclovir, valacyclovir, valganciclovir, aminoglycosides (e.g., gentamicin), and high-dose or multiple NSAIDs [see Warnings and Precautions (5.4)].

Ibuprofen is an NSAID. The label warns about the potential interaction between BIKTARVY and high-dose or multiple NSAIDs.

  • To minimize potential interactions, it is recommended to exercise caution when taking ibuprofen with BIKTARVY.
  • However, the label does not provide specific guidance on the timing of administration, such as a 2-hour interval.
  • Given the potential for interaction, it is advisable to consult the prescribing information for ibuprofen and BIKTARVY to assess the benefit and risk of concomitant use 1.

From the Research

It is generally safe to take ibuprofen with Biktarvy without observing a specific time interval between them, as there are no significant known interactions that would require spacing them apart 2. Biktarvy (containing bictegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide) is an antiretroviral medication used to treat HIV, while ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain and inflammation.

Key Considerations

  • Both medications can potentially affect kidney function when used long-term or in high doses, so patients with existing kidney problems should exercise caution 3.
  • Ibuprofen may cause stomach irritation, so taking it with food can help minimize this side effect.
  • As with any medication combination, it's always best to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you're taking, including over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen, to ensure there are no individual concerns based on your specific health situation or other medications you may be taking 4.
  • Recent studies have shown that Biktarvy is a well-tolerated and effective treatment option for individuals with HIV, including those with end-stage kidney disease on hemodialysis 5, 3.

Additional Information

  • The use of Biktarvy in children and adolescents has also been studied, and it has been shown to be well-tolerated and effective in this population 6.
  • There is ongoing research into the potential of Biktarvy as a treatment option for pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, although more data is needed to fully understand its role in this context 2.
