From the Guidelines
Tamiflu (oseltamivir) should not be used in patients with known serious hypersensitivity to oseltamivir or any component of the product, as well as in individuals with severe renal impairment, unless adjusted dosing is considered. The medication is contraindicated in individuals who have experienced allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis or serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis after previous exposure to the drug 1. Patients with hereditary fructose intolerance should avoid Tamiflu oral suspension due to its sorbitol content. Additionally, caution should be exercised when administering Tamiflu to nursing mothers, as the drug and its active metabolite are excreted in breast milk.
- Contraindications for oseltamivir include:
- Known serious hypersensitivity to oseltamivir or any component of the product
- Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min) without adjusted dosing
- Hereditary fructose intolerance for oral suspension
- Precautions for oseltamivir include:
- Use during pregnancy only when the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus
- Use in nursing mothers, as the drug and its active metabolite are excreted in breast milk
- Use in patients with chronic respiratory diseases, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which increase the risk of bronchospasm when using zanamivir, another antiviral medication for influenza 1. It is essential to consider these contraindications and precautions to minimize the risk of adverse reactions and ensure the safe use of oseltamivir in the treatment and prevention of influenza.
