Post-Resolution Care Instructions for Vomiting
For patients whose vomiting has resolved, you do not need to drink fluids or eat before leaving, and you do not need to urinate before discharge—these requirements are unnecessary and only delay recovery. 1
What You Can Do Now
Fluid and Food Intake
- Start drinking small amounts of clear fluids when you feel ready, but this is not required before you leave. 1
- Begin with small, frequent sips rather than large amounts at once. 2
- Progress to small, frequent meals as tolerated, avoiding trigger foods that previously caused nausea. 2
- Aim for at least 1.5 liters of fluid daily once you're able to drink comfortably. 3
Activity and Rest
- You must have a responsible adult accompany you home and stay with you, as this reduces the risk of complications after discharge. 1
- Rest as needed and gradually return to normal activities as you feel better. 2
Warning Signs to Watch For
Return immediately if you experience:
- Vomiting returns and persists (more than 2-3 episodes). 4, 3
- Blood in vomit (red or coffee-ground appearance). 4, 5
- Severe abdominal pain that is new or worsening. 4, 5
- Signs of dehydration: extreme thirst, dry mouth, decreased urination, dizziness when standing, or confusion. 5, 6
- Inability to keep down any fluids for more than 12 hours. 3, 2
- Fever above 101°F (38.3°C) with vomiting. 4
- Severe headache, stiff neck, or confusion. 4
Follow-Up Care
If vomiting returns:
- Wait 10 minutes after vomiting, then resume drinking fluids slowly in small sips. 7
- Most fluid you drink is actually retained even if some vomiting occurs. 7
- Contact your healthcare provider if vomiting persists beyond 24 hours or if you cannot keep fluids down. 3, 2
Special considerations:
- If vomiting persists for more than 2-3 weeks after initial resolution, you may need evaluation for vitamin deficiencies (particularly thiamine). 4, 3
- Avoid medications that can worsen nausea unless specifically prescribed by your doctor. 2
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Do not force yourself to eat or drink large amounts immediately—this can trigger vomiting to return. 2
- Do not take anti-nausea medications left over from previous illnesses without consulting your healthcare provider, as the wrong medication can mask serious problems. 7, 2
- Do not ignore persistent symptoms—vomiting lasting beyond one week requires medical evaluation. 2
