From the Research
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation (PBM) is effective for anti-aging, as it stimulates collagen and elastin production, improves skin elasticity, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles, as demonstrated by the most recent and highest quality study 1. The use of red light therapy for anti-aging has been extensively studied, with various wavelengths and energy outputs being tested. The most recent study 1 used a red LED mask with a wavelength of 630 ± 10 nm and a power of 15.6 J/cm² for 12 minutes, two sessions per week for 3 months, and found significant improvements in skin quality, including reduced wrinkles, improved firmness and elasticity, and increased collagen production. Some key points to consider when using LLLT or PBM for anti-aging include:
- Consistent treatments of 10-20 minutes, 3-5 times weekly for at least 8-12 weeks are recommended
- Devices with appropriate wavelengths (typically 630-700nm) and energy output (around 10 J/cm²) should be used
- Red light therapy may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation while promoting cellular repair mechanisms
- Results develop gradually and require maintenance treatments
- For comprehensive anti-aging benefits, red light therapy should complement other approaches like sun protection, proper skincare, and healthy lifestyle choices Other studies have also demonstrated the efficacy of LLLT or PBM for anti-aging, including a study using a combination of 633 nm and 830 nm LEDs 2, and a study using low-level red plus near IR LED light combination 3. However, the most recent and highest quality study 1 provides the strongest evidence for the effectiveness of red light therapy for anti-aging.
